About this design

Saint Nicholas and his donkey shows the bishop in a red cope trimmed with gold, mitre on his head and long white beard, a golden crozier in hand and a brown sack over his shoulder. Beside him stands a small grey donkey carrying a strapped bundle on its back. The drawing is simple, with bold outlines and clear colours, rather like a picture-book illustration.

At 67 × 70 mm it suits a bib, a small pouch, a December tea towel or a festive cushion. Use cut-away stabiliser under the knit of a bodysuit or sweatshirt, and choose a pale background, ecru or soft grey, so the red and gold of this machine embroidery stand out.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 8 threads: red, beige, white, brown, gold, burgundy, burgundy, gold. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: red → beige → white → brown → gold → burgundy → burgundy → burgundy → gold → gold → burgundy → red → brown → white. The machine stops at each thread change (13 changes, 55 trims).
  4. Allow about 21 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 9,109 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
