About this design

Surprised Stitch shows the little blue creature sitting down, paws folded in front, big round eyes wide open and mouth slightly ajar. One pale pink ear stands up behind, the other flops down, and a few small marks above the head suggest startled surprise. The strong navy outline and flat areas of sky blue, cream and plum give a graphic, cartoon-style finish.

At 64 × 69 mm it suits a baby bodysuit, a bib, a pouch or the pocket of a child's sweatshirt. Pick a plain light background so the blue stands out, and use tear-away stabiliser under jersey, with water-soluble film on top for crisp machine embroidery outlines.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 7 threads: sky blue, pale pink, cream, white, navy, slate blue, plum. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: sky blue → pale pink → cream → white → navy → slate blue → navy → slate blue → cream → plum. The machine stops at each thread change (9 changes, 23 trims).
  4. Allow about 18 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 9,464 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
