What a XXX file contains
An XXX has a 256-byte header (stitch count, extents, offset to the colour table), then 2-byte records per stitch with escape sequences for jumps, colour changes and end, and finally an RGB colour table. It therefore carries real colours, not palette indices.
Which machines read XXX
Singer Legacy SE300, SE340, SE3000, Singer Futura (through its software), Compucon and older machines with Compucon software. See Singer.
Opening a XXX file
Drop it above or open the viewer: the design appears in relief with colours, stitch count, size and estimated run time. A whole folder opens as thumbnails. The file is read in your browser and sent nowhere.
Converting a XXX file
Broderly reads XXX but does not write it yet. Open your XXX, edit it, resize with stitch recalculation, then export as PES, DST, JEF, VP3, EXP or HUS. For a Singer that only accepts XXX, do the final conversion with the bundled Singer software.
Technical details
- Extension .xxx; 256-byte header, 2-byte stitches, 0x7D escapes for commands, RGB colour table at the end of file.
- 0.1 mm unit; explicit trims.
Frequently asked questions
Why not write XXX?
Because we have no Singer Legacy to verify it on. Writing a format without testing it on a machine breaks needles for others; we prefer to say so.
