About this design

Pink birthday cake shows a three-tier cake, white and covered with pink icing that drips in soft waves down each layer, sitting on a turquoise plate. Three lit yellow candles stand on top, surrounded by small confetti pieces in yellow, burgundy and turquoise. The strong burgundy outline and flat colour areas give it a friendly, illustrated look.

At 64 × 69 mm it suits a snack bag, a child's napkin or a pencil case. Pick a light background, cream or soft grey, so the pink stands out, and use a tear-away stabiliser under medium cotton: this machine embroidery stays crisp wash after wash.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 5 threads: white, salmon, burgundy, turquoise, yellow. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → salmon → burgundy → turquoise → yellow → burgundy → salmon → yellow. The machine stops at each thread change (7 changes, 36 trims).
  4. Allow about 19 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 10,300 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
