About this design

Rolling pin shows a pin set on the diagonal, its pale body outlined in burgundy, with salmon handles and two bands decorated with small turquoise diamonds. Four burgundy hearts of different sizes float around it, and a sage green outline lifts the whole shape from the fabric. The look is graphic and slightly retro, with flat colours and a strong line.

At 70 × 67 mm it suits a tea towel, an apron or a utensil pouch, and works nicely in the centre of a small kitchen cushion. Pick a closely woven cotton in ecru or beige so the white body stays visible, and use a tear-away stabiliser underneath for this machine embroidery.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 5 threads: white, burgundy, salmon, sage green, turquoise. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → burgundy → salmon → sage green → burgundy → sage green → white → turquoise. The machine stops at each thread change (7 changes, 53 trims).
  4. Allow about 17 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 8,388 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
