About this design

Pepper mill shows a mill set at an angle, outlined with a thick brown line, its pale body marked by soft pink bands and one touch of sage green, with a small crank on top. A few rounded peppercorns are scattered around it. The look is gentle and illustrative, like a coloured sketch, in white, brown, pale pink and sage green.

At 60 × 70 mm it sits nicely on a kitchen towel, an apron pocket or a zip pouch. Pick a plain, fairly light fabric so the brown outline stands out, and add a tear-away stabiliser under thin cottons: this machine embroidery of 8675 stitches then stays crisp.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 5 threads: white, brown, pale pink, sage green, brown. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → brown → pale pink → sage green → brown → white → brown. The machine stops at each thread change (6 changes, 39 trims).
  4. Allow about 17 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 8,675 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
