The text
A name on a school garment is 8 to 10 mm tall, 20 to 40 mm wide, in one colour. In satin stitch with a bold sans-serif font, it is legible and survives washing; in triple running stitch, it suits thin fabrics and small sizes (6 mm). Avoid thin-stroke fonts and scripts below 10 mm. In the studio, the text tool warns when the satin would be too thin.
Batch export
Create the design with a first name, set the position and the height, then Export ▸ Custom batch: paste the list of names (one per line) and the studio produces one file per name, all identical except for the text, in the same place, in a ZIP with the list as a CSV. A longer name is automatically tightened to fit the same maximum width if you specify one. The Atelier plan allows 20 names per batch, Atelier+ 500.
Organising the work on a single-needle machine
- A single colour for the whole batch: the thread stays threaded.
- One hoop per garment, light cut-away stabilizer on jersey, tear-away on cotton.
- The files on the stick in the order of the list; the machine runs them one after another without going back to the menu on most recent models.
- Allow 3 minutes per name, hooping included: 30 names, 90 minutes.
Organising the work on a multi-head
Every head sews the same file: for different names, you load one file per run and disable the unused heads, or you use a multiple hoop with a file that contains several names side by side ("Repeat in grid" then replace each text). On an 8-head, eight identical names per run; for names that are all different, a single-needle machine is often faster than a multi-head for batch work.
The pitfalls
- Accents and hyphens: check that the font contains them; the studio's sans-serif font has the French accents.
- Long names: "Anne-Charlotte" does not fit at the same height as "Léo". Set a maximum width; the studio tightens the spacing or reduces the height.
- Placement: the studio's placement guide gives the standard positions (left chest 6 to 8 cm below the shoulder, label, sleeve), carried over to the 1:1 template to print.
