About this design
Halloween border corner shows a swirling corner of foliage: black stems curling into spirals, plum and orange leaves, a pumpkin sitting at the bottom left and two bats flying on the right. The drawing is slim and graphic, with plenty of fabric left visible, so it stays light despite the theme.
Being a corner piece, it sits well on a table napkin, a tea towel, a cushion or the flap of a tote bag, a few centimetres in from the edges. On a pale background, ecru or soft grey, the plum and orange tones read clearly. Use a tear-away stabiliser under cotton, and run your machine embroidery slowly on the fine spirals.
How to stitch it
- Prepare 5 threads: salmon, black, white, plum, black. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
- Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
- Stitch the colours in this order: salmon → black → white → plum → black → black → plum → salmon → white. The machine stops at each thread change (8 changes, 51 trims).
- Allow about 15 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 6,654 stitches in all.
- For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
