About this design
Whale shows a large blue-grey sea creature with a white-striped belly, its tail fin raised and a small spout of water above its head. The navy outlines and even belly lines give it a graphic, gentle look, close to a children's book illustration. The design measures 69 × 69 mm and stitches out in three colours in about fifteen minutes.
It works nicely on a bib, a bodysuit, a soft toy or a zip pouch, and as a pocket motif on a tote bag. On stretchy knits, use a cut-away stabiliser and hoop carefully so your machine embroidery stays crisp. A cream, sand or pale blue background sets off the navy tones well.
How to stitch it
- Prepare 3 threads: slate blue, white, navy. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
- Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
- Stitch the colours in this order: slate blue → white → navy → white → slate blue. The machine stops at each thread change (4 changes, 34 trims).
- Allow about 15 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 8,009 stitches in all.
- For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
