About this design

Sleeping cat shows a little cat curled into a ball, eyes closed, muzzle resting on its front paws and a long striped tail wrapped around its body. The drawing is outlined in a dark line, in a simple illustrated style: a light grey body, a few grey and salmon stripes on the back and tail, and pink touches on the ear and nose. A compact 70 × 68 mm design in four colours.

It works nicely on a bib, a baby bodysuit, a small pouch or a nursery cushion. Use a tear-away stabiliser under stable knits, and pick a coloured background (blue, mustard, terracotta) so the pale grey of the machine embroidery stands out.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 4 threads: white, dark grey, grey, salmon. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → dark grey → grey → salmon. The machine stops at each thread change (3 changes, 39 trims).
  4. Allow about 21 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 12,844 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
