About this design

Waving cat shows a cat standing on its back legs, one front paw raised high as if saying hello. The light grey coat carries darker grey patches on the head, back and tail, the ears are lined in pale pink, and a black outline defines the whole silhouette. The look is graphic and close to a children's book illustration, with just five colours.

At 64 × 70 mm it sits nicely on a baby bodysuit, a bib, a pencil case or a small canvas pouch. On knits, use a cut-away stabiliser, and choose a light or coloured background so the black outline and greys of this machine embroidery stand out.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 5 threads: white, black, light grey, dark grey, pale pink. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → black → light grey → dark grey → pale pink → black → white. The machine stops at each thread change (6 changes, 27 trims).
  4. Allow about 17 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 9,308 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
