About this design

Fine Arabesque Border shows a long horizontal wave ending in two spiral scrolls, one beige, the other blue-grey. Small branches with slender leaves follow the curve, placed above and below it. The lines are thin, and the mix of light grey, blue-grey, black and beige gives a quiet, pen-drawn feel.

At 70 x 43 mm, this machine embroidery sits nicely along the hem of a tea towel, on the flap of a pouch or around a cushion edge, and it can be repeated to make a frieze. Pick a plain, light fabric such as linen or cotton so the fine lines stay readable, and use a light tear-away stabiliser underneath.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 7 threads: light grey, slate blue, grey, black, white, beige, black. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: light grey → slate blue → grey → slate blue → black → white → beige → black. The machine stops at each thread change (7 changes, 34 trims).
  4. Allow about 9 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 3,095 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
