About this design

Crossed Ribbons Border shows a diagonal interlace: two ribbons, one cream and one plum, cross and loop around each other in even curves, outlined with a fine dark edge. The look recalls old decorative braids, in a soft palette of cream, salmon, plum and beige. A square 68 mm format, 4 colours, about 14 minutes of machine embroidery.

Set on the diagonal, it suits the corner of a pouch, a tote bag pocket or a cushion flap. Choose a plain, closely woven fabric such as washed linen or a sturdy cotton, with cut-away stabiliser under the design. A natural or light grey background lets the ribbons show clearly.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 4 threads: cream, salmon, plum, beige. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: cream → salmon → plum → beige. The machine stops at each thread change (3 changes, 36 trims).
  4. Allow about 14 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 8,014 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
