About this design

Symmetrical Central Border shows a diagonal frieze: a navy stem runs across the design, framed by scrolls, small leaves and finely drawn spirals. At the centre, a star-shaped rosette in navy, cream and blue-grey anchors this symmetrical, ornamental composition.

At 69 × 66 mm it sits nicely in the corner of a tea towel, on the flap of a pouch or at the edge of a cushion, and it can be repeated as a border along a tote bag. Choose a plain, closely woven fabric such as linen or natural cotton so the fine lines stay crisp; a tear-away stabiliser is enough. On an ecru background, this machine embroidery keeps all its contrast.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 5 threads: white, navy, cream, navy, slate blue. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → navy → cream → navy → slate blue → navy → white → cream → navy. The machine stops at each thread change (8 changes, 53 trims).
  4. Allow about 18 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 8,238 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
