About this design

Scrolling Foliage Border shows a slender stem running on the diagonal, curling into scrolls and dotted with cut leaves and small elongated buds. Three colours, cream, sage green and black, give quiet depth and a crisp outline, in an old-fashioned ornamental spirit close to engraved friezes. At 68 × 69 mm it stays light and sits neatly in a corner.

It suits the corner of a tea towel, the flap of a pouch or one side of a cushion, and repeats well along a tote bag. On a slightly heavy cotton canvas, use a tear-away stabiliser. A natural or linen background flatters the sage green, though this machine embroidery also works on darker fabrics.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 3 threads: cream, sage green, black. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: cream → sage green → black → sage green → cream. The machine stops at each thread change (4 changes, 38 trims).
  4. Allow about 15 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 7,833 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
