About this design

Hearts and Scrolls Border runs diagonally across the hoop: slim curling scrolls dotted with small solid hearts and slender leaves. Four colours work together, with plum for the lines and hearts, pale pink and light grey for the leaves, and black for a few outlines. The drawing stays airy, with plenty of empty space around it, giving a quiet scrollwork look that is both romantic and graphic.

It suits the corner of a zip pouch, one side of a cushion, or the hem of a linen tea towel. On light fabric, a lightweight cut-away stabiliser is enough; for machine embroidery on jersey, add a water-soluble topping so the fine scrolls stay crisp.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 4 threads: plum, pale pink, light grey, black. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: plum → pale pink → plum → light grey → black. The machine stops at each thread change (4 changes, 47 trims).
  4. Allow about 9 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 3,822 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
