About this design

Simple Arabesque Border shows a supple stem running diagonally across the design, punctuated by tightly coiled scrolls. Almond-shaped leaves open on either side, some beige, others navy or blue-grey, with a few small sky-blue dots scattered between the curves. The style is graphic and airy, inspired by arabesque ornament, with fine outlines and flat blocks of colour.

At 68 × 69 mm, it sits nicely in the corner of a tote bag, along the edge of a tea towel, or on the flap of a pouch. On light cotton canvas or natural linen the beiges really show; use a cut-away stabiliser underneath and press the fabric before machine embroidery to keep the curves crisp.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 5 threads: slate blue, beige, sky blue, navy, navy. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: slate blue → beige → sky blue → slate blue → beige → navy → navy. The machine stops at each thread change (6 changes, 40 trims).
  4. Allow about 11 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 4,501 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
