About this design

Waves and Scrolls Border shows a row of stylised waves curling into spirals, in white, turquoise and sage green, resting on a striped beige band that rises diagonally. A black outline frames every shape, giving it a graphic feel close to Japanese prints.

This border sits nicely along the bottom of a tote bag, on a kitchen towel, down the side of a pouch or in the corner of a bath towel. On a medium cotton canvas, a cut-away stabiliser is enough; on terry cloth, add a water-soluble film on top so the black outlines stay crisp. An ecru or navy background makes the scrolls stand out in machine embroidery.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 5 threads: white, turquoise, beige, sage green, black. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → turquoise → beige → sage green → black → white → beige → sage green → turquoise. The machine stops at each thread change (8 changes, 53 trims).
  4. Allow about 21 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 10,884 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
