About this design

The Floral Arabesque Border shows a brown stem running diagonally, punctuated by curling scrolls. Three stylised flowers in salmon and cream open along it, with grey-green leaves and small red berries. The lines are fine and the mood close to painted folk ornament, with a soft six-colour palette.

This light branch sits well in the corner of a tea towel, on the flap of a pouch or at the edge of a cushion, and repeats easily along a towel hem. On cotton or pale linen, a tear-away stabiliser is enough; choose an ecru or soft grey background, which lifts the salmon and keeps the machine embroidery gentle.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 6 threads: salmon, brown, cream, grey, white, black. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: salmon → brown → cream → grey → brown → cream → grey → salmon → white → black. The machine stops at each thread change (9 changes, 39 trims).
  4. Allow about 13 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 5,310 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
