About this design

Cat shows a little kitten sitting up, head tilted back and mouth wide open as if it were meowing. Its light grey coat carries salmon patches on the cheek and side, the ears are lined with pale pink, and the long plum-striped tail curls round in front. The bold dark outline and big eyes give it a gentle cartoon style.

At 65 × 70 mm it suits a bib, a pencil case or a small cushion for a child's room. On knits such as a bodysuit or sweatshirt, use a tear-away stabiliser with a water-soluble film on top so the outlines stay crisp in your machine embroidery. A cream or pale blue background shows off the grey nicely.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 6 threads: white, plum, salmon, grey, pale pink, salmon. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → plum → salmon → grey → pale pink → salmon → plum → white → salmon. The machine stops at each thread change (8 changes, 28 trims).
  4. Allow about 19 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 10,250 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
