About this design

Sitting Black Cat shows a small dark-coated cat seated at a three-quarter angle, its long tail curving behind it. Large beige eyes, a salmon-pink muzzle, pink inner ears and finely drawn whiskers give it a curious look. The style is cartoon illustration, with clean black outlines and simple flat colour areas in four shades.

At 67 × 68 mm, it suits a zip pouch, an autumn tote bag or the front of a child's sweatshirt. On knits, use a cut-away stabiliser so the filled areas stay smooth and even. A light background, natural or soft orange, shows this machine embroidery off nicely.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 4 threads: dark grey, beige, salmon, black. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: dark grey → beige → salmon → black → dark grey. The machine stops at each thread change (4 changes, 21 trims).
  4. Allow about 16 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 9,035 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
