About this design

Tender Black Cat shows a small cat sitting in profile, its tail curling upwards. The dark grey coat is outlined with white stitching that traces the paws, whiskers and the rim of the wide eyes. The ears are pale pink, matching the collar tied around the neck with its little tag. The style is simple and graphic, with clean outlines and just three colours.

At 67 × 68 mm, it suits a bib, a pencil case or a soft toy. On stretchy fabrics such as a bodysuit or sweatshirt, use a tear-away or wash-away stabiliser depending on the finish you prefer. A light background, ecru or powder pink, shows this machine embroidery off nicely.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 3 threads: dark grey, white, pale pink. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: dark grey → white → pale pink → white → dark grey. The machine stops at each thread change (4 changes, 24 trims).
  4. Allow about 13 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 7,152 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
