About this design

Bubbling Cauldron shows a small, round black cauldron standing on three feet, filled with a light green brew that spills gently over the rim. Four green bubbles float above it, and a smiling face with pink cheeks and wide white eyes brings the pot to life. The style is cartoon-like, with thick outlines, soft curves and a short palette: dark grey, black, light green, pale pink and white.

At 51 × 71 mm it works nicely on a pencil case, a small Halloween tote bag or the front of a child's sweatshirt. For machine embroidery, use a tear-away stabiliser on firmer fabrics and pick a light or orange background so the black cauldron stands out.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 6 threads: dark grey, black, light green, dark grey, pale pink, white. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: dark grey → black → light green → dark grey → pale pink → white → black → dark grey → dark grey. The machine stops at each thread change (8 changes, 36 trims).
  4. Allow about 17 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 8,377 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
