About this design

Cuddly Bat shows a small smiling bat in mid-flight, with a plum-coloured body and wide open wings in pale pink veined with blue-grey. Its big round eyes and cheerful grin make it friendly rather than spooky, and a few little bat silhouettes flutter around it. The style is illustrated, with clean outlines and soft filled areas.

At 66 × 65 mm it sits nicely on a baby bodysuit, a pencil case or a cotton tote bag for trick-or-treating. On jersey, use a cut-away stabiliser so the outlines do not pull, and pick a light or soft orange background: the plum of the wings stands out well in machine embroidery.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 7 threads: pale pink, slate blue, plum, plum, plum, white, pale pink. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: pale pink → slate blue → plum → plum → plum → white → plum → slate blue → pale pink → plum → plum. The machine stops at each thread change (10 changes, 47 trims).
  4. Allow about 19 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 8,966 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
