About this design

Cute Bat shows a small grey bat facing you with its wings spread wide, big round white eyes, an open smile and pointed ears lined in salmon. Plum outlines trace every shape, giving a rounded, illustrated look that is playful rather than spooky.

At 69 × 69 mm it suits a Halloween tote bag, a pencil case, a baby bodysuit or a little cushion for a child's room. Pick a light or softly coloured background so the greys and the salmon stay readable, and use a cut-away stabiliser under stretchy knits: this machine embroidery has plenty of filled areas and the fabric needs to stay steady.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 6 threads: light grey, grey, salmon, plum, white, plum. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: light grey → grey → salmon → plum → white → plum → plum → grey. The machine stops at each thread change (7 changes, 31 trims).
  4. Allow about 19 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 10,603 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
