About this design

Puppy shows a small beige dog sitting in profile, with floppy ears, a burgundy collar and a rosy cheek. Three hearts in salmon and white float around it. The strong burgundy outline and flat colour areas give an illustrated, cartoon-like style that stays clear even at this small size.

At 69 mm square, it suits a bib, a baby bodysuit or a soft toy, and also makes a sweet front panel for a zip pouch. On stretchy knits, use a cut-away stabiliser with a water-soluble topping so the outlines stay crisp. A light background, ecru or pale blue, brings out the beige nicely. This machine embroidery takes about twenty minutes.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 6 threads: beige, beige, white, burgundy, salmon, salmon. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: beige → beige → white → burgundy → salmon → salmon → burgundy → white → salmon → beige. The machine stops at each thread change (9 changes, 26 trims).
  4. Allow about 20 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 10,608 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
