About this design

The Jack-o'-lantern pumpkin shows a plump orange pumpkin with clearly ribbed sides, a carved grin, two round eyes and one little tooth. A green stem curls above it, and a few sage leaves peek out at the base. Everything is outlined in a thick plum line, in a simple, readable children's book style.

At 67 × 68 mm it works nicely on a Halloween tote bag, a zip pouch or an autumn cushion. On a sweatshirt or jersey, use cut-away stabiliser and a water-soluble film on top so the plum outline stays crisp. Cream, mustard or black backgrounds suit this machine embroidery well.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 6 threads: salmon, plum, sage green, beige, white, beige. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: salmon → plum → sage green → beige → white → plum → salmon → beige → beige → sage green. The machine stops at each thread change (9 changes, 47 trims).
  4. Allow about 25 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 13,144 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
