About this design

Pumpkins and bats brings together two orange pumpkins with clearly ribbed sides and softly curved beige stems, surrounded by four black bats with open wings. The largest bat, at the top left, has a few white lines marking its face and wings. The style is simple and graphic, with clean outlines and solid colours, in a friendly Halloween mood.

At 69 × 67 mm, this design works nicely on a trick-or-treat tote bag, an autumn tea towel, a pouch or a seasonal cushion. On natural cotton canvas the oranges stand out well; use a cut-away stabiliser so the large black areas do not pull on the fabric during machine embroidery.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 4 threads: salmon, black, white, beige. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: salmon → black → white → beige → salmon. The machine stops at each thread change (4 changes, 36 trims).
  4. Allow about 15 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 8,169 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
