About this design

Blue Bluebell shows a single nodding flower with sky-blue petals touched with white, hanging from a slender stem that curves to the left. Long sage-green leaves fan out around it, each outlined in dark grey, which gives the whole design the look of an old botanical plate. The drawing stays simple, with flat colour areas and clean outlines.

At 70 × 69 mm it sits nicely on a kitchen towel, a linen pouch or the corner of a cushion cover. Light backgrounds, beige or ecru, let the blues show. Use a tear-away stabiliser under cotton, and a fusible one for machine embroidery on softer fabrics.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 4 threads: sage green, sky blue, dark grey, white. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: sage green → sky blue → dark grey → white → dark grey → sage green → sky blue → white. The machine stops at each thread change (7 changes, 34 trims).
  4. Allow about 14 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 6,513 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
