About this design

Stem With Mauve Flowers shows a flowering branch set on the diagonal: three open bells and two closed buds in plum and mauve tones, carried by a slender stem and long tapered sage-green leaves. A darker outline traces the shapes and gives the design the quiet, delicate look of a hand-drawn botanical plate.

At 68 × 70 mm it sits nicely on a linen pouch, a kitchen towel or the corner of a cushion. On a medium-weight woven fabric a cut-away stabiliser is enough; pick a light background, natural or pale grey, so the white and plum of the machine embroidery stay easy to read.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 6 threads: sage green, white, grey, plum, dark grey, slate blue. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: sage green → white → grey → plum → dark grey → sage green → grey → slate blue. The machine stops at each thread change (7 changes, 53 trims).
  4. Allow about 16 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 7,607 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
