About this design
Orange Poppy shows an open flower with salmon petals outlined in black and a dark green centre. The sage green stem curves gently towards a bud that is still closed, while deeply notched dark green leaves spread out from the base. The strong black outlines give the whole design the look of a hand-drawn botanical illustration.
At 68 × 69 mm, it sits well on a tote bag, a linen tea towel, a pouch or a cushion cover. On pale fabric, natural or soft grey, the salmon tones come through clearly. Use a tear-away stabiliser under woven cottons, and a cut-away one if you are stitching this machine embroidery on knit.
How to stitch it
- Prepare 5 threads: dark green, salmon, salmon, black, sage green. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
- Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
- Stitch the colours in this order: dark green → salmon → salmon → black → sage green → salmon → salmon → dark green. The machine stops at each thread change (7 changes, 33 trims).
- Allow about 18 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 9,510 stitches in all.
- For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
