About this design

Baby elephant shows a small grey elephant standing up, trunk raised high and mouth open as if laughing. The big rounded ears, the bright eye and the slim tail with its little tuft give it a playful look. A dark outline frames the whole design, with two shades of grey plus touches of pink and brown: a simple cartoon style that stays readable even at a small size.

At 68 × 70 mm, it works nicely on a bib, on the pocket of a tote bag or on a flat comforter. On jersey, use a cut-away stabiliser with water-soluble film on top so the outlines stay crisp. A light background makes the greys stand out.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 6 threads: white, dark grey, light grey, white, pale pink, brown. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → dark grey → light grey → white → pale pink → dark grey → white → light grey → white → brown. The machine stops at each thread change (9 changes, 23 trims).
  4. Allow about 17 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 8,860 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
