About this design

Purple Flower shows a single flowering stem, carefully drawn: a wide open bloom with lavender grey petals outlined in plum and a small cream centre, along with a closed bud and a second bud at the top of the stem. The long, toothed sage green leaves are edged in dark thread, in the spirit of an old botanical plate.

At 69 × 70 mm, it sits well on a pouch, a light canvas tote bag or the corner of a linen tea towel. Use a medium weight fabric with tear away stabiliser, and pick an ecru or very pale grey background so the petals keep their definition. A friendly piece of machine embroidery.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 5 threads: sage green, light grey, cream, plum, white. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: sage green → light grey → cream → plum → sage green → white → cream. The machine stops at each thread change (6 changes, 39 trims).
  4. Allow about 21 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 11,708 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
