About this design

Hedgehog shows a small hedgehog standing in profile, nose lifted and front paws folded over its tummy. The back is covered with brown spines drawn as even points, with a few beige strokes for depth, while the belly and face stay pale. The brown outline and rounded shapes give it a gentle, storybook look.

At 65 × 70 mm it sits nicely on a bib, the pocket of a tote bag or a child's cushion. On stretchy knit such as a bodysuit, use a cut-away stabiliser, and choose a plain background fabric in a light or soft green shade so the brown spines stand out clearly in your machine embroidery.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 5 threads: white, brown, brown, beige, beige. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → brown → brown → beige → brown → beige → white. The machine stops at each thread change (6 changes, 30 trims).
  4. Allow about 24 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 14,280 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
