About this design

Owl shows a little night bird drawn in a cartoon style, perched on a slim branch with a few leaves. The plumage mixes cream, beige and brown tones, with wings outlined in gold, an orange beak and large eyes ringed in burgundy that give it a curious look. The strong outlines keep the design readable even at a small size.

At 67 × 69 mm it suits a bib, a pencil case or the pocket of a child's sweatshirt. On knit fabric, use a cut-away stabiliser and choose a plain light background, ecru or soft blue, so the warm browns of this machine embroidery stand out.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 8 threads: cream, brown, white, gold, burgundy, salmon, brown, beige. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: cream → brown → white → gold → burgundy → salmon → brown → burgundy → brown → cream → gold → beige → white. The machine stops at each thread change (12 changes, 55 trims).
  4. Allow about 27 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 13,312 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
