About this design

Lion cub shows a small seated lion in profile, head turned towards you, eyes closed and muzzle smiling. His beige mane, drawn with wide rounded locks, frames a plain cream body, and the long tail curves up to a little tuft. The deep red outline gives the whole thing the look of a picture-book drawing, soft and easy to read.

At 66 × 69 mm, it suits a bib, the pocket of a bodysuit or a small snack bag. On jersey, use a cut-away stabiliser and a water-soluble film on top so the mane stays crisp. A natural or pale blue background shows this machine embroidery off nicely.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 6 threads: beige, cream, cream, salmon, brown, burgundy. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: beige → cream → cream → salmon → brown → burgundy → cream. The machine stops at each thread change (6 changes, 20 trims).
  4. Allow about 19 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 10,616 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
