About this design

Clumsy mummy shows a small character wrapped from head to toe in white bandages, arms out and legs apart as if about to topple over. The large blue-grey eyes and plum outlines give it a playful, childlike look rather than a scary one. The style is graphic, with clearly drawn grey bands over a pale body.

At 67 × 69 mm it suits a Halloween tote bag, a child's sweatshirt or a treat pouch. Pick a deep background colour, orange, black or purple, so the white bandages stand out. On stretchy knit, a cut-away stabiliser keeps your machine embroidery neat and flat.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 4 threads: white, plum, light grey, slate blue. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → plum → light grey → slate blue → plum → white. The machine stops at each thread change (5 changes, 67 trims).
  4. Allow about 23 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 12,158 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
