About this design

Green Monster shows a small character with sage-green skin and a thick plum-coloured bowl of hair, walking along with a cheerful stride, eyes squeezed shut and mouth wide open in a big laugh. He wears a green tee, plum trousers and pale trainers. The outlines are bold and the style is clearly cartoon, giving a Halloween feel that is more funny than frightening.

At 50 × 70 mm it sits nicely on a child's tee-shirt, a pencil case, a tote bag or a sweatshirt pocket. On stretchy knits, use a cut-away stabiliser underneath and a water-soluble film on top so the machine embroidery keeps clean edges. A light cream or grey background makes the green and plum stand out.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 7 threads: sage green, plum, plum, sage green, white, pale pink, grey. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: sage green → plum → plum → sage green → white → pale pink → plum → white → grey → sage green. The machine stops at each thread change (9 changes, 44 trims).
  4. Allow about 19 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 9,314 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
