About this design

Green Monster shows a small character with a sage-green face, a square head and spiky black hair, big round eyes and a calm half-smile. He wears grey dungarees with straps and stands slightly leaning to one side. The style is flat colour with thick black outlines, like a cartoon illustration, finished with a white border all around.

At 52 × 69 mm it suits a Halloween tote bag, a child's sweatshirt or a zip pouch. On knits, use a cut-away stabiliser underneath and a water-soluble film on top so the black outlines of this machine embroidery stay crisp. A light background, ecru or pale grey, lets the green stand out.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 6 threads: sage green, black, dark grey, white, sage green, grey. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: sage green → black → dark grey → white → sage green → grey → black → white → dark grey → sage green → grey. The machine stops at each thread change (10 changes, 37 trims).
  4. Allow about 19 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 9,082 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
