About this design

Panda shows a seated panda in profile, holding a bamboo stem with sage green leaves between its paws. The body plays on the contrast of white and dark grey, with plum touches around the eyes and ears and salmon pads under the feet. The drawing is simple and a little illustrative, with no fussy details.

At 70 × 69 mm it sits nicely on a bib, the pocket of a small sweatshirt or a tote bag. On jersey, use a cut-away stabiliser so the white areas stay crisp, and pick a light or pastel background so the dark grey stands out without making the machine embroidery look heavy.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 5 threads: white, dark grey, plum, salmon, sage green. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → dark grey → plum → salmon → sage green → plum → sage green → white. The machine stops at each thread change (7 changes, 30 trims).
  4. Allow about 19 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 10,447 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
