About this design

Ball of yarn shows a round ball of wool made of criss-crossing bands in white, beige and plum, framed by a dark outline. A single strand escapes and curves gently to one side. The style is simple and graphic, with just three colours and a look close to a line drawing.

At 70 x 67 mm, this design suits a knitting pouch, a tote bag, a tea towel or a cushion for your craft corner. On light fabric the beige and plum tones read clearly; on linen or medium cotton, a tear-away stabiliser is enough. Place the loose strand towards a seam to extend the movement in your machine embroidery.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 3 threads: white, beige, plum. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → beige → plum → white → beige. The machine stops at each thread change (4 changes, 36 trims).
  4. Allow about 20 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 11,533 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
