About this design

Shy koala shows a small koala sitting down, its body in blue-grey, big round ears lined with pale pink and a wide black nose. The front paws meet in front of it and the white and grey eyes glance sideways, giving the little animal a reserved, slightly bashful look. Bold black outlines and flat colour areas recall comic-book illustration, in a compact 66 × 70 mm format.

It suits a bib, the pocket of a baby bodysuit or the front of a soft toy, and works nicely on a small pouch too. On stretchy knit, use a stable tear-away stabiliser and pick a light background, ecru or sand, so the blue stands out easily in machine embroidery.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 7 threads: sky blue, pale pink, white, dark grey, black, cream, slate blue. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: sky blue → pale pink → white → dark grey → black → cream → slate blue → black → slate blue → sky blue. The machine stops at each thread change (9 changes, 32 trims).
  4. Allow about 21 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 11,203 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
