About this design

Little Vampire shows a small smiling character giving a wink, with black hair in a point on the forehead, two little fangs and a wide black cape lined with red. The outlines are clean and dark, in a simple cartoon style, with soft greys and white shaping the face.

At 63 × 71 mm, it works nicely on a pouch, a Halloween tote bag or the front of a child's sweatshirt. Choose a light background, pearl grey or ecru, so the black cape stands out, and add a tear-away stabiliser underneath: this machine embroidery runs to around 11,300 stitches and likes fabric hooped firmly.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 6 threads: black, white, red, black, dark grey, grey. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: black → white → red → black → dark grey → black → red → black → grey. The machine stops at each thread change (8 changes, 29 trims).
  4. Allow about 21 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 11,303 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
