About this design

Clumsy Little Witch shows a small girl in a large pointed plum hat, trimmed with an orange band and a golden buckle. She rides a broom with an orange handle, her plum cape and striped dress trailing behind, laced boots kicking out and a cheeky smile under a brown fringe. The drawing is simple, with flat blocks of colour, like a little comic illustration.

At 62 × 67 mm, she suits an October tote bag, a pencil case or the front pocket of a child's sweatshirt. On knits, use a cut-away stabiliser and a water-soluble topping to keep the outlines crisp. A cream, mustard or light grey background shows off the plum of this machine embroidery nicely.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 6 threads: plum, plum, beige, gold, brown, white. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: plum → plum → beige → gold → brown → white → plum → gold → beige → plum → white. The machine stops at each thread change (10 changes, 41 trims).
  4. Allow about 20 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 9,729 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
