About this design

Penguin shows a little bird standing upright, head tilted to one side, eyes closed in two cheerful arcs and its orange beak wide open. The back and flippers are navy blue, the belly white, the cheeks softly pink, and the orange feet finish the picture. A steady dark outline around every shape gives it a graphic, storybook look.

At 63 × 70 mm it suits a bib, the pocket of a child's sweatshirt or a pencil case. Pick a light background, pearl grey or sky blue, so the navy stands out clearly, and use a cut-away stabiliser on knits such as a bodysuit: your machine embroidery will keep crisp edges wash after wash.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 5 threads: white, plum, salmon, navy, salmon. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: white → plum → salmon → navy → salmon → navy → white → salmon → salmon. The machine stops at each thread change (8 changes, 25 trims).
  4. Allow about 19 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 10,222 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
