About this design

The Highland cow shows a russet cow's head seen from three quarters, with a long shaggy fringe falling over the eyes, two large curved white horns and a light grey muzzle. A small pale pink flower sits near the ear. The strong black outlines and drawn strands give an illustrated look, gentle and easy to read even at a small size.

At 66 × 70 mm, it suits a bib, a pouch, a tote bag or the pocket of a sweatshirt. On stretchy knit, use a cut-away stabiliser, and choose a light background, ecru or beige, so the reddish coat stands out in your machine embroidery.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 7 threads: salmon, white, pale pink, light grey, black, salmon, salmon. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: salmon → white → pale pink → light grey → black → salmon → black → salmon → salmon → light grey. The machine stops at each thread change (9 changes, 42 trims).
  4. Allow about 22 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 11,521 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
