About this design

Highland cow shows a cow's head seen from three quarters, with a long shaggy brown fringe, wide pale curved horns, a beige muzzle and closed, arched eyes. A small pale pink flower sits near the ear. The bold black outline and flat colour areas give an illustrated, cartoon-like look that stays clear even at a small size.

At 70 x 69 mm, it suits a bib, a baby bodysuit, a tote bag or a zip pouch. On soft knits, use a cut-away stabiliser with a water-soluble film on top so the strands of hair stay crisp; a natural or soft green background shows this machine embroidery design off nicely.

How to stitch it

  1. Prepare 7 threads: salmon, black, white, beige, pale pink, brown, dark grey. The names give the closest shade; pick the one you like in your thread brand.
  2. Hoop the fabric in a 10 × 10 cm hoop with a stabiliser: tear-away for woven fabric (cotton, linen, canvas), cut-away for stretchy fabric (T-shirt, sweatshirt, bodysuit).
  3. Stitch the colours in this order: salmon → black → white → beige → pale pink → brown → dark grey → black → brown → white → salmon → beige. The machine stops at each thread change (11 changes, 30 trims).
  4. Allow about 21 minutes at 700 stitches per minute, 10,486 stitches in all.
  5. For another size, open the design in the studio rather than enlarging it on the machine: the stitches are recalculated and the density stays right.
